The Rev. Dr. John Stott has announced that he will formally retire after fulfilling one final speaking engagement at the upcoming Keswick Convention in July 2007. Though John himself is retiring, his ministries are not! His legacy is well established throughout the world through John Stott Ministries/Langham Partnership International. Under the leadership of International Director Rev. Dr. Chris Wright, JSM-Langham is assisting the church to grow in Christian maturity through training, preaching resources, and scholarship throughout the Majority World.
“Uncle John,” as he is known affectionately, has written more than 50 books, including his latest, The Living
Church: convictions of a lifelong pastor, to be released in the U.S. in November 2007. David Brooks of the New York Times wrote that Uncle John has been called the “pope for evangelicals” and Billy Graham has said John represents a “touchstone of authentic biblical scholarship that…has scarcely been paralleled…”
We feel that Uncle John deserves nothing more than the finest of birthday bashes, but it’s up to you how to recognize this milestone. To celebrate, you might feel the need to do something simple. Perhaps you can give Uncle John a “shout out” in your blog. Maybe you’ll change your cat’s name to “Langham.” Or you can spend your summer evenings hooting at the neighbors like a snowy owl.
Or you can celebrate in a way that will change the world.
Celebrate John Stott’s 86 years (and counting) and over 30 years of JSM-Langham’s service to the global church, and make a commitment to the John Stott Global Initiative. This strategic endeavor, fully endorsed by John himself, will ensure the long-term sustainability of Uncle John’s vision to equip and empower the Majority World church for generations to come.
Happy Birthday, Uncle John.
